A rare and highly decorative antique Victorian fireplace surround, finely cast in iron with an exceptional level of intricate floral and foliate ornament.

The shaped opening is framed by densely cast scrolling foliage, flowers and repeating decorative motifs, centred above by an elaborate cartouche containing crossed branches. Further scrolling foliate ornament extends beneath, while the outer jambs are more restrained, with moulded panels and circular bosses providing a striking contrast to the richly detailed inner surround.

The fireplace is surmounted by an elegant serpentine shelf, echoing the flowing lines of the decoration below.

An unusually elaborate example of Victorian decorative ironwork, the intricacy and extent of the cast ornament distinguishing it from more commonly encountered cast iron chimneypieces of the period.

We removed a pair of these fireplaces. Although the decorative motifs differ slightly, Naseby and Milford are architecturally of the same form and would make a striking pair. This listing is for Naseby only; the two fireplaces can be seen together in one of the accompanying images.
