An elegant and finely executed original Regency fireplace surround, beautifully crafted from white statuary marble with richly figured Siena marble panels.
The frieze is centred by a Wedgwood jasperware plaque, depicting a classical mythological scene in the celebrated white-on-green relief for which Wedgwood became renowned.
The restrained classical proportions and crisp architectural detailing are complemented by exceptional carved ornament, making this a particularly refined example of early 19th-century English design.
Flanking the plaque are richly coloured Siena marble panels, their warm golden tones providing a striking contrast against the cool statuary marble. Matching carved urn tablets to each end of the frieze reinforce the balanced neoclassical composition.
The jambs are headed with finely carved Ionic capitals and feature carved masks with pendant husk swags terminating in stylised acanthus leaves. Every element displays the quality and precision associated with Regency craftsmanship, from the dentilled cornice to the fluted mouldings and carefully selected marble throughout.
