An antique Georgian carved wooden fireplace surround

The frieze is carved with tightly spaced fluting, centred and flanked by applied oval paterae framed with laurel wreaths and ribbon ties.

The jambs are adorned with crisply carved pendant ribbon bows and cascading swags. The moulded shelf is surmounted by a refined dentil and bead course, with a further carved egg-and-dart below.

A well-balanced example of Georgian, neoclassical fireplace design, combining disciplined geometry with finely executed decorative carving.
