Exceptional Regency Statuary Marble Chimneypiece

PRODUCT ID: BINKY

A rare and highly refined early 19th century Regency chimneypiece in statuary marble, executed with an exquisite level of carving and architectural control.

Removed from Knowle House, Cranleigh, an early 19th-century country residence rebuilt in the 1820s and long associated with a succession of well-connected private owners. Over the course of the 20th century the house passed through several distinguished occupants, reflecting its status as a substantial yet discreet Surrey seat.

The property was also linked to the circle surrounding Prajadhipok following his abdication in 1935. During his years in England, the former King of Siam and his consort Queen Rambai Barni were known to reside at Knowle house.

Strongly rooted in the neoclassical language popularised by Robert Adam, the design draws on the refined vocabulary of late 18th century interiors. The frieze is crisply fluted and centred by an elegant classical urn tablet, suspended with swags and finely modelled husks.

At either end, oval paterae provide balance, their petal carving sharp and deeply cut. The jambs are equally accomplished, with attenuated proportions and delicately carved foliate drops, terminating in distinctive ram’s head blocks linked by draped garlands — a strong neoclassical motif referencing sacrifice and antiquity, and indicative of a sophisticated workshop.

The shelf is boldly projected with a well-resolved moulded profile, giving the piece both presence and architectural weight without heaviness.

Gently restored at our Hertfordshire workshop and warehouse where it can be viewed.
