An original, antique Georgian fireplace surround carved in statuary white marble, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century.
The design follows the restrained neoclassical principles typical of the Georgian period, with elegant architectural proportions and finely carved decorative elements. Georgian chimneypieces were heavily influenced by classical Greek and Roman design, favouring symmetry and refined ornament rather than heavy Baroque decoration.
The frieze is centred with a carved tablet flanked by elongated mouldings terminating in stylised shell motifs. The jambs feature tall recessed panels with further shell detailing, while the double-aspect capitals are richly carved with scallop shells and flowing foliate forms.
A highly decorative and well-proportioned antique chimneypiece that would sit beautifully in both period interiors and contemporary spaces.
