An exceptional early 18th-century fire basket combining sculptural form with refined craftsmanship.
The cast-iron backplate is richly modelled in high relief with a classical figure framed by scrollwork and stylised dragon-form beasts. 4 front bars, with a central deorative motif, are flanked by tall, elegantly turned brass finials, providing a balanced contrast to the black cast iron.
A striking focal point, it embodies the transition from ornate Baroque exuberance to the emerging symmetry of Georgian design.
