Antique Corinthian Capitals

A pair of superb antique Corinthian capitals, carved from sandstone. These outstanding architectural pieces date from the late the late seventeenth to the early eighteenth century. The capitals feature exquisite decoration, including masks; acanthus leafs, scrolling details and cherubs. As the capitals were salvaged from the bed of the River Thames in London some of the detailed carving has now worn away. Most likely, the capitals were either on a building which was demolished during the widening of the Thames Embankment, or where deposited there after the Blitz as part of the area's clean-up. They would make spectacular architectural features either in a home or garden, and could be used for anything from a table base to architectural decoration.
