VICTORIAN NEO-CLASSICAL ANTIQUE CAST IRON FIREPLACE
Antique Victorian burnished cast iron chimneypiece or fire surround in the Neo-Classical style, the breakfront shelf with dentillated and moulded cornice, above a frieze of seven palmettes with stiff-leaf and scrolled foliage, the architrave with bold egg and dart outer moulding and inner finely cast water leaf mould.

Internal opening: 37ins (94cm) wide, 38ins (96.5cm) high
The palmette motif, egg and dart, water leaf and dentil course became popular after the classical revival of the Italian renaissance was brought to England by architects and designers such as William Kent and Robert Adam in the 18th century. These motifs continued to embellish cast iron stoves, grates and fireplaces from the 1770s onwards through to the Edwardian period of the early 1900s.
